Hotshots Contest 2005

Teens ages 9 -15 entered the 12th annual Connecticut Recreation and Parks Association Hot Shot competition in Newington, CT this past month. This annual even is put on locally, and then state wide in a variety of towns across Connecticut to allow teens to show off their basketball skills in point scoring. This event is not to highlight the abilities of a few teens statewide, but to use basketball to promote healthy lifestyles amongst boys and girls ages 9-15 through physical activity.

The Contest are held in participating local towns, like Meriden, Litchfield, Bristol, Darien, Tolland and New London, to name a few. Top winners advanced to compete in county and state championship rounds. In a time when childhood obesity is such a large issue in the news, programs that get teens off the couch and into recreation are instrumental. The American Obesity Association finds that for adolescents (ages 12 to 19), 30.4 percent are overweight and 15.5 percent are obese. An unhealthy lifestyle can lead to health complications such as; Asthma, and Hypertension as well as Social Psychological stigmas, and problems. Obesity in Youth can be attributed to poor dietary habits and inactivity.

Through physical fitness, and positive social interaction, these teens can see the benefit of recreation in their lives. The Connecticut Recreation and Parks Association and Mr. Trophy sponsor this statewide program to promote basketball enthusiasm as well as basketball skills, fun, physical fitness and good sportsmanship.
