8:30 - 10:00 AM Character Education Through Creative Recreation
A variety of research shows that nationwide, children today are lacking core values such as kindness, respect, self-control,integrity and accountability. The importance of instilling character education in today’s youth needs to be at the top of the agenda for school professionals, childcare providers, parents, and other decision makers. We will review both the components of character education and learn how creative, interactive play can be utilized to help instill core values. Speaker John
LaRue holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Therapeutic Recreation (Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist), Registered Provider for ASLA and is a Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI).

10:00 - 10:45 AM Tour the historic Goodspeed Opera House

10:45 AM - 12:00 Noon New Games: The Foundation of Cooperative &
Non-Competitive Play & Games

We begin by playing. We get back to basics and experience pure play along with others.
Games such as: Name Train, Snap, Hog Call, People to People and Group Juggle are all but
a few of the games we will play. You will see the original slide show from the New Games
Foundation that takes us back to the 70’s, which is who started the movement on cooperative,
non-competitive play. The session ends as we discover basic game components and
learn a technique on how to adapt, modify and/or create a “new” game. Speaker John LaRue

10:45 AM - 12:00 Noon Waivers?
So you think you are covered with your participant waiver at the bottom of your program form? Do
you think that waivers will help your department avoid and stand against claims and lawsuits? Come and learn interesting insights and differences about waivers and participant agreements. This lively discussion will help you to navigate the legal loopholes and vulnerabilities you may have in your programs. Speaker Dr. Joseph Panza from Southern CT State University.

12:00 - 12:30 PM MyRecDept.com
Ray Foley, the founder and CEO of MyRecDept.com, will briefly review the functionality of the MyRec.com software. Also disused will be the basics of online registration, including the costs of a merchant account and PCI-DSS compliance.

1:00- Boarding River Cruise
1:30-3:00 River Cruise

Join us for a complimentary river cruise after
lunch. Cruise along the CT river you and you will see the
Goodspeed Opera House and the East Haddam Airport.
On the way south, the guide will point out where a local
eagles nest is (may catch a glimpse, hard with the leaves
on the trees) and you will have a chance to view a very
beautiful section of the pristine lower Connecticut River.
During the cruise your Captain and crew will narrate
about local history, point out areas of interest and inform
you of the river’s flora and fauna. We may even see our
Bald Eagles! You will experience an area that has been
labeled by The Nature Conservancy as "One of the Last
Great Places". You will also get a great view of Gillette
Castle State Park, Connecticut's greatest tourist attraction
and the Chester/Hadlyme Ferry, the second oldest
operating ferry in the United States.
There is comfortable seating for each individual aboard
RiverQuest. Passengers can be out of the sun, wind,
drizzle in our cozy cabin area. Or sit outside on our open
deck.
